Collegiate Monastery of Our Lady in the Old Chapel
Collegiate Monastery of Our Lady in the Old Chapel, Romanesque monastery in Regensburg, Germany.
This collegiate monastery in Regensburg's old town displays Romanesque architecture with thick stone walls, rounded arches, and a tower that dominates the local roofline. The complex includes spaces for religious services and former living quarters for the monastic community.
Emperor Henry II and his wife Kunigunde founded it in 1002 on a site that had previously held a Roman temple dedicated to the goddess Juno. The structure underwent several transformations, particularly during the Baroque period when the interior decoration was significantly enhanced.
The name "Old Chapel" reflects its long-standing role as a gathering place for the faithful throughout the centuries. Inside, the Baroque decoration with frescoes and gilded details shows the craftsmanship that was valued during that period.
The site is centrally located in Regensburg at Alter Kornmarkt 8 and is easily accessible on foot from the main pedestrian areas. It is best to contact the church office in advance to arrange visits and learn about available tour options.
It holds the distinction of being the oldest surviving collegiate monastery in Bavaria and continues to house an active monastic community today. This uninterrupted occupation for over a thousand years makes it a living link between the medieval period and the present day.
