Collegiate Monastery of Our Lady in the Old Chapel

This collegiate monastery in Regensburg's old town displays Romanesque architecture with thick stone walls, rounded arches, and a tower that dominates the local roofline. The complex includes spaces for religious services and former living quarters for the monastic community.

Emperor Henry II and his wife Kunigunde founded it in 1002 on a site that had previously held a Roman temple dedicated to the goddess Juno. The structure underwent several transformations, particularly during the Baroque period when the interior decoration was significantly enhanced.

The name "Old Chapel" reflects its long-standing role as a gathering place for the faithful throughout the centuries. Inside, the Baroque decoration with frescoes and gilded details shows the craftsmanship that was valued during that period.
