Stadtturm Straubing, Medieval watchtower in Straubing, Germany.
Stadtturm Straubing is a gothic defensive tower that rises approximately 60 meters above the main square with a pointed roof crowning its top. The structure features multiple stories of red brick masonry and houses a functioning bell system with a clock face.
The tower was built in the late 13th century as part of Straubing's city fortification and served as a defensive structure against attacks. Over the centuries it underwent repairs and received its bell system for timekeeping and signaling to residents.
The tower serves as a landmark that residents and visitors use to navigate the city center. Its silhouette appears in countless local photographs and descriptions of the town.
Reaching the observation platforms requires climbing a narrow spiral staircase with many steps, demanding some physical effort. Comfortable shoes and choosing cooler times are recommended since the interior space is confined and openings are limited.
Inside the tower visitors can see a visible collection of bells and clock mechanisms from different time periods all working together. Some mechanical parts display different crafting techniques and were never replaced but instead layered and stacked on top of each other.
