Theater Die Kleine Freiheit, Former cabaret and theatre in Maxvorstadt, Germany.
Theater Die Kleine Freiheit was located on Maximilianstrasse and offered about 180 seats for its audience. The house initially presented cabaret shows before focusing exclusively on theatrical performances from 1961 onward.
The theater was founded in 1951 under the direction of Trude Kolman, initially as Atelier Theater on Elisabethstrasse. Friedrich Hollaender produced four successful cabaret revues between 1957 and 1961 that shaped an important phase of its history.
The name refers to the artistic freedom the house gave to its performers. Artists like Ursula Herking and Oliver Hassencamp shaped audiences with their performances over many decades.
The venue is located in the Maxvorstadt neighborhood and was accessible to the public for many years with a diverse program. Since its permanent closure in November 1996, the former performance space can now only be viewed from the outside.
Writer Erich Kaestner created the original programs for the house's early phase. His creative vision laid the foundation for the artistic profile that the venue would come to represent.
