The Städtisches Krankenhaus Eppingen is a historic building constructed in the late 1800s from sandy stone, featuring traditional design with a sloped roof and small tower. Its three-wing layout arranged around a central courtyard was modern for its time and remains visible in its current structure.
The hospital opened in 1895 after the town council decided in 1891 to build a new medical facility to replace a smaller health unit connected to the old town hall. Originally with about 52 beds, it was unusually large for the area and served as the main health center for Eppingen and surrounding towns for decades.
The building carries the name of its original purpose and location within the town. Many families in Eppingen have personal connections to the place through relatives who worked or received care there over the decades.
The building is easily accessible from the main street and remains clearly visible due to its distinctive sandy stone facade and small tower. Visitors should note that the interior is now used for medical practices and is not fully open to the public for general exploration.
A local pharmacist named Lotter helped launch the idea by creating a fund for the hospital, making this modern facility possible for the town. The maternity ward remained operational until 1980 and was an important resource for births in the region for many decades.
