Tausendfüßler, Elevated highway in Bonn, Germany
The Tausendfüßler is an elevated expressway carrying the A565 federal motorway across Bonn for approximately 630 meters between the Tannenbusch and Endenich junctions with four traffic lanes. The structure spans the city without emergency lanes and handles daily vehicle flows well above its original design expectations.
The bridge was completed in 1959 as part of an elevated B9 road project. It was later upgraded to motorway status in 1971 and given its current A565 designation in 1974.
The name Tausendfüßler, meaning millipede, comes from the many support columns visible along the structure, especially in its northern section. These distinctive pillars shape how locals and travelers think of the bridge.
The bridge provides a continuous passage above multiple city routes and rail lines without interruption. You can view the structure from ground level at various points below, particularly from the streets and railway areas underneath.
The structure crosses multiple transport routes beneath it, including Lievelingsweg, Brühler Street, four railway tracks, and the northern section of Bonn's freight station. This layering of different transportation types makes it a remarkable convergence point in the city's infrastructure.
