Turmbergbahn, Funicular railway in Durlach district, Karlsruhe, Germany.
The Turmbergbahn is a funicular railway in the Durlach district of Karlsruhe, running 315 meters up the Turmberg hill on a single track with a passing loop. Two cars travel in opposite directions at the same time, each moving between the lower and upper stations.
The railway opened in 1888 and originally ran on a water ballast system, where the weight of water in a tank pushed the cars along the track. The line was fully rebuilt in 1966 and converted to electric operation, which is how it runs today.
The Turmbergbahn is a regular weekend destination for families and walkers from Karlsruhe and the surrounding area. At the top, people spread out along the hiking paths or simply sit and look out over the lowlands below.
The ride itself is short, so it fits easily into a half-day outing in and around Durlach. Good walking shoes are worth bringing if you want to explore the paths that start near the upper station.
The Turmbergbahn is one of the oldest funiculars still running in Germany, a fact that most visitors pass by without noticing. The Turmberg also carries the remains of a medieval castle just a short walk from the upper station.
