Typenturm, Communications tower in Flensburg, Germany
The Typenturm is a water storage tower in Flensburg, built on a cylindrical brick base topped by a rounded tank. The brickwork across the entire structure follows a Gothic-inspired pattern, with carefully shaped details visible at close range.
The tower was built between 1911 and 1913 under architect Hans Gernand to supply the city with stored water. It remained in active use for most of the 20th century before being taken out of service.
The tower shows how early 20th-century engineers in Germany shaped practical infrastructure with careful brickwork in a Gothic-inspired style. Walking around it today, visitors can see how craft and function were treated as equally worth attention.
The tower can be reached on foot and is best seen from the outside, as the interior is not open to visitors. Daytime is the right time to come if you want to see the brickwork clearly.
The Typenturm is part of a network of around 300 water towers built across Germany following the same basic design. Despite sharing a common template, each one was adjusted to local conditions, which means no two are exactly alike.
