The Unabhängiges Jugendzentrum Kornstraße occupies a former factory building with different areas including workshops, a cinema, a printing house, and performance spaces. The facility uses multiple buildings at Kornstraße 28-30 and gained extra room after acquiring a neighboring structure.

The UJZ was founded on 15 July 1972 by the "Initiativgruppe Jugendzentrum" in a rented former factory building on Kornstraße, with the aim of politicising young people. A 1971 occupation of an empty house on Arndtstraße by five youths had been cleared by police. The city funded rent, upkeep and two social workers from 1974 to 1979, then stopped; in 1982 the lease expired and staff bought the building.

The UJZ Korn was a meeting point for Antifa, the anti-nuclear movement and punks, and in the 1980s it became a centre of hardcore punk with bands from beyond Hanover playing there. The band Abstürzende Brieftauben was founded here, and the Chaostage that led to the occupation of the Sprengel site started from the centre.

In 2011 the UJZ bought the neighbouring house at Kornstraße 32 for €200,000, raising the sum through individual loans of €5,000 and small donations. The purchase enlarged the usable area from 500 to 800 m², and the building was to be fully converted with the help of construction firms and members' own work.
