University Church, Freiburg

The University Church is a religious building in Freiburg im Breisgau with a long architectural tradition. Its interior features white walls, large windows that flood the space with light, and a notable sculpture of Christ created by Franz Gutmann from Münstertal.

The building was constructed between 1683 and 1701 as a Jesuit church during the Baroque period. After the Jesuits were dissolved in 1793, the Albert-Ludwigs-University took ownership and has maintained it as a place of worship ever since.

The church serves as a spiritual center for the university community, drawing students and faculty for daily prayers and celebrations. Its excellent acoustics make it a preferred venue for musical performances throughout the year.

The church is located on Bertoldstraße in Freiburg's city center and is open to visitors during daytime hours. Entry is free of charge, though it is respectful to be mindful of any services or religious gatherings taking place.

Bernard Boll, the first archbishop of the Freiburg Archdiocese, was ordained as a priest within these walls in 1827. This event tied the building to an important chapter of the region's ecclesiastical history.
