Voßberge, Nature reserve in Sottrum, Germany
Voßberge is a nature reserve near Sottrum comprising sand dunes, meadows, and wooded sections in Lower Saxony. The landscape shows a mix of different terrain types that support varied plant and animal communities.
The reserve was established in 1936 when the sand dunes were still active and shifting. Over time, vegetation and tree planting gradually fixed the dunes and transformed the landscape.
The land management shifted from traditional sheep grazing after World War II, leading to natural forest colonization of the former open dune areas.
The terrain can become muddy after rain, so sturdy footwear is advisable for a comfortable visit. The location is easily reached by car or bicycle and offers several informal entry points for exploring.
The area preserves remnants of Ice Age wandering dunes made of quartz sand that have accumulated over millennia. These ancient dunes are now anchored by vegetation and show how landscapes can transform completely over time.
