Wallfahrtskirche St. Leonhard, Baroque pilgrimage church in Kaufering, Germany
Wallfahrtskirche St. Leonhard is a Baroque structure on the southern edge of Kaufering with a three-sided octagonal apse and an octagonal bell tower topped by an onion dome. The interior holds an organ by Albert Reiser and three bells, two of which date to the early 18th century.
A stone building replaced a wooden chapel that collapsed in 1712, receiving consecration from Auxiliary Bishop Johann Jakob von Mayr of Augsburg in 1723. A major restoration in 1975 renewed the structure and added the third bell.
Saint Leonard, the patron of livestock and travelers, shapes the spiritual life of this place through regular processions and monthly devotions. The community gathers together to honor this local saint and keep the traditions of their ancestors alive.
The location is easily accessible on the town's outskirts, allowing visitors to reach it on foot or by car. A solid ground level inside and around the building makes exploration comfortable, and the surrounding area offers room to walk around.
Legend says the veneration image of Saint Leonard arrived through flooding of the Lech River and kept reappearing in a meadow despite being placed in an oak tree. This unusual arrival story made the place a pilgrimage destination for those drawn to the miraculous tale.
