Bordelumer Heide und Langenhorner Heide mit Umgebung, Nature reserve in Bordelum and Langenhorn, Germany
Bordelumer and Langenhorner Heide are two connected protected areas in northern Schleswig-Holstein featuring open heathland, moorland, and scattered ponds. The landscape includes both drier sandy areas and wetter zones with vegetation typical of moorland ecosystems.
The earliest protection for this area came in 1938 when Bordelumer Heide was designated as a nature reserve. A redesignation and expansion occurred in 1991, creating the current protected area with updated management approaches.
The protected area holds significance for locals as a space where traditional heathland management keeps the landscape open and walkable. Residents value it as a place where they can spend time outdoors and observe how nature changes with the seasons.
The area is best explored on foot or by bicycle, with several walking paths crossing the open landscape. A nearby observation hill provides good views across the entire protected zone and helps orient visitors.
The reserve supports a notable population of moor frogs and spadefoot toads that depend on its wetland areas. These amphibians thrive in the wet zones and indicate the ecological health of the protected landscape.
