Autobahnkirche St. Christophorus

The Autobahnkirche St. Christophorus is a chapel at the A5 motorway rest area in Baden-Baden with a distinctive pyramid shape and window walls arranged to form a cross. Colorful enamel doors and artistic details characterize the interior of this modern house of worship.

Following an architectural competition in 1976, architect Friedrich Zwingmann designed this sanctuary, which Bishop Karl Gnädinger consecrated on July 23, 1978. The building emerged from the desire to serve travelers seeking brief moments of reflection during their journeys.

Artist Emil Wachter created extensive religious artworks displayed throughout the interior, including wall decorations and altar installations that shape the visual character of the space. Visitors experience these works integrated into the building's architecture as they move through the sanctuary.

The chapel sits at the Baden-Baden rest area off the A5 motorway and is easily accessible from the highway. Visitors will find regular times for quiet reflection, especially on Tuesday evenings, and ample space to pause during their travels.

Four maple tree avenues arranged in a cross pattern lead visitors to the chapel, each ending with a concrete marker defining the sacred grounds. This botanical arrangement shapes the approach to the sanctuary in a subtle way.
