St. Johannes der Täufer in Kronach is a Gothic hall church built of sandstone ashlar, with a three-aisled nave, a polygonal choir and a west choir-like structure. Its roughly 35-metre tower with a pointed spire stands on the north side of the choir; the south side has a sacristy added in 1770. The west front holds the 1498 John Portal, flanked by pinnacles and framed by a crocketed ogee arch.

The church was built in several phases beginning in the early 14th century, with the main nave completed between 1406 and 1408. Tower construction extended over two centuries and has shaped the town's appearance ever since.

The church is named after John the Baptist, its patron saint. The sandstone figure of John above the west portal is a copy; the original is on loan to the Fränkische Galerie at Rosenberg Fortress. Inscriptions in the church wall recall the cemetery that once surrounded the building, replaced in the 19th century by a new burial ground outside the old town.

The church stands on the south side of Melchior-Otto-Platz in Kronach's old town, with the choir and its 1770 sacristy facing south and the roughly 35-metre tower on the north side. The main entrances are the decorated Johannesportal of 1498 on the north side of the west building and simpler portals on the west front and on the north and south sides of the nave. The churchyard that once surrounded it is gone; the 16th-century Annakapelle next door served as its cemetery chapel and charnel house until burials moved outside the old town in the 19th century.

The tower reached four storeys by 1345; master builder Matthes Schmidt added two more and a pointed spire between 1551 and 1558, giving it its present height of about 35 metres. The sandstone figure of Saint John above the 1498 Johannesportal is a copy; the original is on loan to the Fränkische Galerie at Rosenberg Fortress.
