Uhyst Castle, Cultural heritage monument in Boxberg, Germany
Uhyst Castle is a three-story neoclassical manor house located near the Spree river in the municipality of Boxberg, in Upper Lusatia in eastern Germany. The building stands within a park that features a pond, old trees, and walking paths on the grounds.
The current building was constructed in 1738 under Graf von Gersdorff, replacing an earlier structure from the 16th century that had been established by Kaspar von Nostitz. The estate changed hands several times over the following centuries as the region itself went through major political shifts.
The park around the castle mixes French garden geometry with English landscape design, and this contrast is easy to notice as you walk through it. Straight paths give way to open lawns and natural-looking tree groups within a short distance of each other.
The castle park is open to visitors and can be explored on foot without any special preparation. Those interested in seeing inside the building should check in advance, as interior access is not always available.
For four decades, from 1952 to 1992, the building was used as a medical sanatorium, a function very different from its origins as a noble residence. Some traces of that period can still be noticed in parts of the building if you look closely.
