Neuer Markt is a rectangular square at the heart of Stralsund, surrounded by red-brick buildings with Gothic features and pointed gable roofs. The open space is lined with cafes, shops, and restaurants at street level in the surrounding structures.

The square developed in the 13th century when Stralsund grew as a Hanseatic merchant city and needed a central trading hub. The Gothic buildings surrounding it were constructed from the 14th to 16th centuries and continue to define its appearance.

The square functions as the social heart of Stralsund, where locals and visitors gather to shop, dine, or spend time together. It continues to serve as a meeting place that connects the city's past with its present daily rhythms.

The square has 165 parking spaces and two disabled spaces, and is used for weekly and annual markets. Seven streets lead onto it, including Mönchstraße, Langenstraße and Tribseer Straße. A public toilet has stood on the east side since 1954.

In 2021, during redesign work, remains of a separate town hall that once stood on the west side of the square were found; the excavations were later backfilled and levelled. A memorial stone set in the paving in front of Neuer Markt 14 recalls the Papenbrand thom Sunde of 1407.
