St. Johannes Baptista, Catholic parish church in Altenkessel, Saarbrücken, Germany.
St. Johannes Baptista is a Catholic parish church with Gothic Revival architecture in Altenkessel. The building features a three-nave basilica layout with a prominent tower topped by a spire divided into four distinct sections.
The church was built in 1902 and 1903 according to designs by Wilhelm Hector. After World War II, extensive restorations were needed to address war damage and issues caused by ground subsidence.
The pulpit displays detailed figures of the four Church Fathers Jerome, Ambrose, Augustine, and Gregory carved into its design. The original Marian altar remains in place and forms a central part of the interior.
The crypt beneath the sacristy was converted into a weekday chapel in 2000 and provides additional space for prayer and reflection. Visitors can easily access this lower level to explore how the underground space functions as part of the church's everyday use.
Three windows in the choir section display scenes from the life of John the Baptist, depicting key episodes from his story. Outside the church stands a Lourdes grotto that serves as a separate outdoor prayer space for visitors.
