Lennetal bridge, Road bridge in Hagen, Germany
The Lennetal Bridge crosses the Lenne valley with a length of nearly 1,000 meters and features two parallel steel box girders with concrete roadway decks for each direction. The structure carries traffic in both directions across six lanes and is equipped with noise protection walls.
The original bridge was built in 1967 and carried traffic on the A45 motorway for many decades. As it aged and demands grew, construction of a modern replacement structure began in 2013.
The bridge is part of a major transport route that connects communities across North Rhine-Westphalia and shapes daily life for many people. It stands as a testament to the region's ability to tackle large-scale engineering challenges.
The bridge is normally open to vehicle traffic as part of the A45 motorway network and may experience delays during poor weather or accidents. Pedestrians and cyclists cannot access the bridge, as it is a motorway-only route.
In March 2021, engineers performed a spectacular lateral shift, moving the entire structure nearly one kilometer sideways in just six hours. This operation ranks among the largest of its kind in German bridge engineering.
