Burg Kaltenstein

Burg Kaltenstein is a castle situated on the Urleinsberg near Röhrnbach, featuring a prominent stone tower that rises above the surrounding landscape. The tower has a square base and a pyramid-shaped roof, representing the typical design of medieval defensive buildings.

The castle received construction rights from the Bishopric of Passau in 1389 to protect the Golden Path, a major trade route between Bavaria and Bohemia. The tower was built during this period as a defensive structure and remains today as evidence of this medieval fortification era.

The tower sits along a route that was vital for medieval trade and reflects how people built structures to control their lands and protect valuable commerce. Its stone walls show the architectural choices people made when building strongholds in the 14th century.

The castle can be viewed from outside and is reachable by hiking trails that pass through the area. Since the structure is privately owned, the interior is not open to visitors and you should respect the grounds when approaching the site.

The tower entrance is positioned about 2 meters (6 feet) above ground level, a classic feature of medieval defensive towers for protection against attacks. The lower walls retain original medieval masonry from the 14th century that has survived to this day.
