Herrenhaus Lehsen, Manor house in Wittenburg, Germany
Herrenhaus Lehsen is a two-story plastered building with nine axes, a central portico supported by four Tuscan columns and a flat triangular pediment. The classical structure appears proportioned and representative, with a clear symmetric facade typical of manor houses from this period.
Joseph Christian Lillie designed this manor house in 1822 for chamberlain Ernst August von Laffert, marking the entrance with Roman numerals. Later in the 19th century, a neo-Gothic chapel was added to the property, becoming part of the architectural ensemble.
The building displays the motto 'Musis et Amicis' above its entrance, reflecting Ernst August von Laffert's dedication to arts and hospitality. The inscription reveals how the owner valued cultural life and welcoming guests into his home.
The building stands on a country estate outside the town center, accessible on foot or by car. The surrounding grounds with landscaped areas and the chapel on a mound offer multiple spots to explore during a visit.
A neo-Gothic funeral chapel from 1868 stands on a moated mound within the grounds, sharing architectural details with the church at Schwerin Castle. This unusual addition reveals how the manor was part of a larger spiritual and cultural complex for the family.
