Bedburg-Königshoven, Archaeological excavation site in Bedburg, Germany
Two Mesolithic red deer antler head-dresses with precise skull modifications and lateral perforations were discovered in fluviatile sediments near the Erft river.
The excavation began in 1987 after mechanical diggers exposed ancient animal bones during lignite mining operations that destroyed the former village of Morken.
The antler head-dresses represent early evidence of potential ceremonial practices among Mesolithic hunter-gatherer communities in western Germany.
Researchers from Monrepos Archaeological Research Centre continue analyzing the artifacts through modern methods to determine their functional purposes and modifications.
The site yielded exceptionally preserved bones from red deer, roe deer, aurochs, dogs, birds, and fish, dating back approximately 9,780 years.
