Christoph 38, Emergency medical helicopter in Dresden, Germany
Christoph 38 is an air rescue helicopter operated by DRF Luftrettung from Dresden International Airport. The aircraft carries medical equipment and delivers emergency care to patients within a service area around the city.
The service started on 1 July 1993 with a Bo 105 helicopter originally operated by the Federal Police East Air Squadron. In January 2006, DRF Luftrettung took over operations and continued the emergency response service.
The name Christoph comes from Saint Christopher, revered in German air rescue services as the patron of travelers. This naming choice reflects the protective role the helicopter plays for people in emergencies.
The helicopter operates during daylight hours and requires a clear landing zone at least 25 by 25 meters (82 by 82 feet) in size. Patients receive medical care either at the scene or during flight from trained medical personnel.
The medical team collaborates with specialists from several major hospitals in the region, including teaching clinics in Dresden. This partnership brings specialized medical expertise directly to patients during transport.
