Alter Friedhof Durlach, cemetery in Durlach, Karlsruhe Government Region, Bade-Württemberg, Germany
The Alter Friedhof Durlach is a former cemetery in Karlsruhe now used as a park with lawns and a playground. The Simeonskirche chapel stands at the site with a crypt hall beneath it containing over 30 old graves, while gravestones remain on the outer walls and scattered throughout the grounds.
The cemetery opened in 1804 and served until 1874, then continued for additional burials before final closure. The chapel was built in 1837 by architect Friedrich Eisenlohr, and the city opened a new cemetery in 1902 as the original site became full.
The site served as a burial place for centuries and continues to shape local memory today. The remaining gravestones and chapel ruins tell of the people who lived here, revealing social differences through varying monument styles and inscriptions.
The grounds are now easily accessible as a green park in Karlsruhe and open to all visitors. You will find walking paths, lawns, and a play area for children, while the old stones and chapel reveal the site's historical nature.
The memorial for the 1847 Hoftheater fire and monuments to events like the 1848/49 revolution show how historical disasters and political upheavals were recorded in gravestones. These stones preserve memories of dramatic moments in the city's past.
