Kunsthalle Messmer, Contemporary art museum in Riegel am Kaiserstuhl, Germany

Kunsthalle Messmer occupies the former Riegeler Brauerei in Riegel am Kaiserstuhl. The broad white building has red-brown trim bands and window surrounds, rectangular windows with reddish frames, three arched portals at ground level, and a cylindrical tower with a green conical roof on the right. Dark letters spelling "kunsthalle messmer" run across the upper facade, and a tall red-brick chimney stands behind the building.

The institution was established in 2009 in a building that previously operated as a brewery. Its early years focused on presenting works by international artists, particularly those working with geometric and abstract forms.

The museum is run by the messmer foundation, which Jürgen A. Messmer set up in 2005 in memory of his daughter Petra, who died of cancer in 2003. The International André Evard Prize, named after the Swiss painter whose estate Messmer acquired in 1978, is awarded every two to three years to artists working in concrete-constructive art, with a jury prize and a public prize.

The museum occupies the rooms of the former Riegeler Brauerei in Riegel am Kaiserstuhl, with around 900 m² of exhibition space indoors and an 850 m² sculpture garden outside. Up to three exhibitions of classical modern and contemporary art are shown each year, drawn from the Messmer collection and international loans. Since 2013 a commercial gallery in the historic columned room of the brewery has shown works by young artists.

The sculpture garden covers 850 m² and holds contemporary sculptures by Gerald Baschek, Hellmut Bruch, Gerhard Frömel, Friedrich Geiler, Bernhard Licini, Rüdiger Seidt, Michel Jouët and Michael Schwarze. It belongs to the museum in the former Riegeler Brauerei, whose exhibition space totals around 900 m².
