St. Johannes-Hospital, Historic hospital building in Bonn-Castell, Germany
St. Johannes-Hospital is a red-brick building with three wings and Neo-Gothic design details located where Kölnstraße and Wachsbleiche meet in northern Bonn. The structure combines historic outer walls with updated interior spaces now serving as medical offices and health facilities.
The building opened in 1849 as a civic hospital dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and operated as a medical facility until 2005. Though severely damaged during World War II, it survived and was later converted into a medical center.
The Sisters of Mercy shaped daily patient care through their dedication and presence at the facility for over a century. Their work gave the building its reputation as a place of compassionate healing.
The building is easily accessible from surrounding streets and can be reached from several directions. Modern facilities include parking and accommodations for visitors seeking various medical services.
A renowned architect donated his design work without charge before construction began in 1846. Local citizens funded the entire project through private donations, making it a genuine community effort.
