St. Mauritius, church building in Medingen
St. Mauritius is a baroque church in Bad Bevensen located at the center of a monastery complex. The building features a tall tower with copper roof, white and pink interior walls, a large brass chandelier decorated with a double eagle and dragon from 1655, and an altar with a relief image of Jesus Christ.
The monastery was first documented in 1228 and has centuries of tradition as a religious community. After a major fire in 1782, it was rebuilt in a new symmetrical H-shaped design and continues today as an active women's community.
The name St. Mauritius honors a saint venerated in the church. The space is used by the community for prayers and singing, particularly in the nuns' choir section where women gather during services.
The church is accessible by car with free parking near the complex. You can also reach it on foot or by bicycle, and a bus stop is about one kilometer away.
A large brass chandelier from 1655 hangs in the church bearing the name Margredta von Dassel, an abbess from that era. This piece directly connects the monastery's early history with the church's interior today.
