Bärenbrunnen (Berlin)
Bärenbrunnen (Berlin), fountain at the Werderscher Markt in Berlin, Germany
Welcome to Berlin, a city full of history and culture. As your tourist guide, I would like to introduce you to one of the most beautiful fountains in the city, the Bärenbrunnen. The Bärenbrunnen is a fountain that depicts the Berlin coat of arms animal, a brown bear, as a family. The fountain is located in the Mitte district of Berlin, specifically at Werderschen Markt in front of the Friedrichswerdersche Kirche. This decorative fountain was created by Hugo Lederer in the 1920s using red lava tuff stone and was installed on Werderschen Markt in 1928. Unfortunately, due to the fighting during the end of World War II in the city center of Berlin, the stone artwork was destroyed. However, the Magistrat von Berlin commissioned the sculptor Walter Sutkowski to recreate the fountain based on historical designs during the reconstruction of the city center. The complete replica of the fountain was installed and put into operation in its original location in 1958. A plaque on the base of the fountain provides information about its history. All parts of the fountain are made of red stone to match the nearby Bauakademie. The base of the fountain consists of an octagonal 60-centimeter-high pedestal with a diameter of 3.50 meters. On every second long side, there is a pair of playing bear cubs. The four pairs are guarded by the mother bear, who sits on another 70-centimeter-high octagonal pedestal. Between the bear cubs, there is a depression from which small fountains spout. The young bear figures are 60 centimeters high, while the mother bear is approximately 1.25 meters tall. Visitors can enjoy the beauty of the Bärenbrunnen while taking a stroll through the historic Mitte district of Berlin. The fountain is easily accessible by public transportation, and there are plenty of cafes and restaurants nearby to grab a bite to eat or drink. Don't forget to take some photos of this beautiful fountain as a souvenir of your trip to Berlin.
