Waterloo-Denkmal, War memorial obelisk in Luisenplatz, Wiesbaden, Germany
The Waterloo Memorial is a sandstone obelisk on a multi-tiered pedestal in Wiesbaden's Luisenplatz, crowned with a grenade and bearing metal emblems on each side. The structure combines German inscriptions with coat-of-arms symbols and compositions of flags and weapons.
The obelisk was erected in 1865 to commemorate 337 Nassau soldiers who died in the 1815 Battle of Waterloo. The names of these soldiers are engraved alphabetically by district on the monument's sides.
The memorial displays the names of fallen soldiers engraved on its surfaces, serving today as a place where visitors come to remember and reflect on those who died in service.
The memorial stands in the central Luisenplatz and is easy to reach as it sits on an open square in the city center. Visitors can stop by at any time and view the inscriptions and metal details from all sides.
The obelisk features zinc-cast emblems displaying letters of different Nassau dukes and showing heraldic symbols in rare combinations. These metal details are skillful works that often go unnoticed but reveal fine craftsmanship from the 19th century.
