Ensemble Wiener Hof, Wohngebäude in Bremen-Mitte
The Ensemble Wiener Hof is a residential building complex in Bremen-Mitte consisting of three wings of apartment houses built between 1905 and 1907. The buildings feature uniform facades with large windows and floral decorative details characteristic of early 20th-century design.
Architects Rauschenberg and Müller acquired the land in 1903 and built this innovative housing complex between 1905 and 1907 to accommodate about 20 families. The ensemble was designated a protected monument in 1973 and received recognition in 2018 for exemplary restoration work.
The name Wiener Hof refers to the building layout, which is structured like a large residential estate with a shared courtyard. Residents use the central green spaces and inner courtyard as common areas, giving the ensemble a sense of community.
The complex is located on Weberstraße in the Mitte district and is accessible and walkable from the street. The area is quiet and allows plenty of room for walking and photographing the historic facades.
This was an unusual solution for its time and among the first multi-family housing in the Ostertor neighborhood, which otherwise consisted of single-family homes. The gates feature distinctive wrought iron grilles with floral patterns that set them apart from the simple row houses common elsewhere in the city.
