Teufelsbadstube, Geotope and chine in Kalchreuther Forst, Germany
Teufelsbadstube is a sandstone gorge in Kalchreuther Forst characterized by steep rock walls that frame a winding stream below. The chine extends for several hundred meters and showcases distinctive reddish stone formations along its length.
The sandstone formed approximately 200 million years ago from sediments of an ancient shallow sea that gradually hardened into stone. Over thousands of years, water erosion carved these rock layers, creating the deep gorge visible today.
The name refers to the old legend of the gorge's mysterious character and the waters flowing through it. Visitors today can experience how this place has remained an important landmark for people in the surrounding region for many generations.
The site is accessible via several hiking trails through surrounding forests, with parking available near the gorge entrance. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear, as the ground can be uneven with small stream crossings along the way.
A small waterfall exists in the upper section of the gorge, appearing most dramatic during months following heavy rainfall when water flow increases significantly. This natural feature is one of the few places in the region where visitors can observe such a water display.
