Zoo Zabakuck, Zoo in Zabakuck, Germany
Zoo Zabakuck is a zoo in Zabakuck in the Jerichower Land district of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, covering about 3 hectares next to the old Zabakuck manor. It keeps roughly 120 animals of 29 species, among them old domestic breeds such as Bentheim Black Pied pigs, four-horned sheep and Lachshühner chickens, plus mouflon and fallow deer. A zoo café was built from August 2013, and new enclosures followed.
The zoo was founded in 1974 and has been part of the local community for decades. Between 2013 and 2014, the facility underwent renovation with new enclosures and improved animal housing.
The zoo focuses on traditional farm animals and native wildlife that visitors rarely encounter elsewhere. The space demonstrates how animals were historically kept and invites guests to learn about local animal life.
The park lies on partly swampy ground and loose soil, so after several days of rain a layer of mud forms in the hoofed-animal enclosures; sturdy footwear helps. It stands at Am Park 11 in Zabakuck, directly by the old Zabakuck manor, and since 1998 has been run by the Elbe-Havel-Werkstätten.
Zoo Zabakuck is known for rare, traditional animal breeds such as four-horned sheep and endangered pig varieties that are difficult to find elsewhere. Some animals have lived here for many years and have become part of the local story.
