Vitra Slide Tower, Steel observation tower in Weil am Rhein, Germany.
The Vitra Slide Tower is a steel observation structure in Weil am Rhein that rises 31 meters high with a viewing platform positioned at 17 meters. An oversized clock face measuring 6 meters across crowns the structure and functions as both a design element and a working timepiece.
German artist Carsten Höller designed this work, which opened to the public on June 18, 2014. It was created as part of the Vitra Campus's ongoing expansion into artistic installations and public spaces.
This tower sits within the Vitra Campus, a place where visitors can experience contemporary architecture and design as living spaces rather than museum pieces. The surrounding buildings show how modern creators shape environments that people genuinely want to use and explore.
Visitors climb stairs to reach the viewing platform, while descent happens through a 38-meter spiral slide tube wrapped around the structure. This makes the journey down a deliberately physical and memorable experience rather than a simple exit.
The slide itself is an artistic element created by a well-known Belgian artist recognized for sculptural experiences that transform how we move through space. Visitors often remark that descending this way creates an unusually playful and surprisingly joyful way to exit an artwork.
