Burgstall Saalenstein

Burgstall Saalenstein is a medieval castle ruin perched on the steep riverbank of the Saale near Hof. Visible remains include foundation walls, a vault carved into the embankment, and traces of defensive earthworks.

The fortress dates to the 12th century and later became a boundary stronghold between regions. Excavations uncovered bronze objects and coins that document early occupation of the site.

The location served as a border checkpoint between territories for centuries and shaped regional affairs. Visitors can sense this strategic role through its position overlooking the river valley.

The site is now privately owned and has been transformed into a garden setting with a restaurant. A locked gate controls access, so visitors should arrange a visit in advance.

The modern Autobahn 72 runs directly across the castle hill, creating an unusual contrast between medieval ruins and contemporary infrastructure. Stone walls and the moat have been incorporated into the surrounding garden design.
