Schloss Seehaus, Château in Petting, Germany
Schloss Seehaus is a castle overlooking Weidsee lake near Petting in Bavaria's Traunstein district, combining medieval design with fortified structures typical of defensive architecture. The building displays features from multiple construction periods spanning several centuries.
The Counts of Thann originally built this castle before it passed to Archbishop Rudolf of Salzburg around 1280. It then served as a strategic guard post controlling access along the salt trading route.
The castle chapel honors Saint Rupert and reflects the spiritual role the building held for its inhabitants over centuries. Walking around the exterior, you can sense how religion shaped the life within these walls.
The castle is privately owned and closed to the public, but you can view the exterior from designated viewing areas around the grounds. The lake provides good vantage points to see the building's facades, especially from the pathways along the shoreline.
During restoration work in 1985, workers uncovered late Gothic paintings hidden beneath the interior walls, revealing decoration that had been covered for centuries. These discoveries show the interior spaces were once far more ornately decorated than the current exterior appearance suggests.
