Speicher I, Protected cultural heritage monument in Walle, Germany

Speicher I is a seven-story warehouse on Konsul-Smidt-Straße in the Überseestadt, measuring 226 meters long and 30 meters wide. Its red-brick facade is filled with a visible reinforced-concrete grid and high-set window bands. The building is divided into 16 sections served by heavy-duty lifts, with ramps on both sides for rail and truck loading.

The building was constructed between 1948 and 1950 replacing an earlier warehouse from 1888 that was destroyed during World War II. This postwar rebuilding reflects how Bremen restored its harbor and storage capabilities in the years following the conflict.

The name Speicher I simply means "Warehouse I", marking it as the first storage block rebuilt at the Europahafen after the war. Its red-brick facade with a visible reinforced-concrete grid and high window bands follows the functional harbor style of the 1950s. Today the former storage floors hold shops, offices, services and a restaurant, and the building is a protected monument since 2006.

The building is not open for tours; it now houses shops, offices, service providers, storage and a restaurant. Visitors can view the exterior from Konsul-Smidt-Straße and the Europahafen waterfront. The surrounding Überseestadt district is best reached on foot or by bicycle.

In 2006, the former warehouse was transformed into modern office and commercial lofts while retaining the original wooden floors from its warehouse days. This adaptive reuse demonstrates how a historic harbor building gained new purpose and now serves multiple contemporary functions.
