Speicher I, Protected cultural heritage monument in Walle, Germany
Speicher I is a seven-story warehouse building in Walle with a gently sloping gabled roof measuring approximately 226 meters long and 30 meters wide. The structure features an exposed steel-concrete frame with high-positioned window bands designed to house large quantities of stored goods.
The building was constructed between 1948 and 1950 replacing an earlier warehouse from 1888 that was destroyed during World War II. This postwar rebuilding reflects how Bremen restored its harbor and storage capabilities in the years following the conflict.
The building reflects Bremen's harbor architectural style through its exposed steel-concrete grid and high-positioned window bands. These design features shape the district's appearance and tell of an era when such structures dominated waterfront life.
The building is best explored during daylight hours to fully appreciate the architectural details and interiors. Since it is a protected monument, visitors should check ahead for available tours or access arrangements.
In 2006, the former warehouse was transformed into modern office and commercial lofts while retaining the original wooden floors from its warehouse days. This adaptive reuse demonstrates how a historic harbor building gained new purpose and now serves multiple contemporary functions.
