St. Cosmas und Damian, église allemande
St. Cosmas und Damian is a parish church built from red brick in Holzweiler, Erkelenz, constructed in the Gothic Revival style. The building features tall pointed arches, colorful stained glass windows from the 1960s, and a tower about 57 meters high that stands as a distinctive landmark.
The earliest parts of the church date back to the 11th or 12th century. In the mid-1800s, the building was reconstructed in the Gothic Revival style and received its current form with a main nave and triangular choir.
The church is named after Saints Cosmas and Damian, two patrons associated with healing and craftsmanship. Visitors who enter the interior can still see signs of this devotion reflected in the window designs and altar furnishings.
The church is open to visitors on most days and sits in a pedestrian-friendly location within the town. Nearby cafes and shops provide places to relax after exploring the historic building.
The church tower was first begun in 1903 but was torn down due to structural defects and successfully rebuilt in 1914. Inside, there is a wooden crucifix from the early 1400s that serves as a quiet witness to generations of religious devotion.
