Unterer Wöhrd, River island in Regensburg, Germany
Unterer Wöhrd is a river island alongside Regensburg's old town that stretches about 1.8 kilometers long and roughly 250 meters wide. It covers around 28 hectares and includes walking paths and cycling routes that allow visitors to explore throughout.
The island formed during the Roman period when the legion camp Castra Regina was built in the 2nd century. By medieval times it had become an important economic location for fishing and later developed industrial uses.
The island was once a gathering place for fishing and sailing communities who made their living from the river. Over time it became a working hub with factories and facilities that shaped daily labor in the region.
The island is easily reached from the old town via the Iron Bridge and has well-maintained paths for walkers and cyclists. At normal water levels, additional connections to the other Danube island become accessible.
A stone dam built in 1388 runs beneath the Stone Bridge and becomes walkable during normal water levels, connecting the two islands in a hidden way. This overlooked structure offers an unexpected passage between the riverbanks.
