Nibelungenkaserne Regensburg, Military barracks in Galgenberg district, Regensburg, Germany.
The Nibelungenkaserne in Regensburg is a former military installation with numerous buildings constructed according to Luftwaffe architectural standards in the 1940s. The grounds span about 33 hectares and combine different building types from the original anti-aircraft artillery site.
The grounds were built between 1939 and 1941 as a site for anti-aircraft artillery and served the United States Army from 1945 onwards under the name Fort Skelly until 1964. This made it a significant military location in the Danube city for decades.
The preserved structures show how military architecture looked during that period, with former officers' quarters now serving as student housing for the University of Regensburg. This conversion shapes daily life on the grounds and creates a mix of historical buildings and modern student activity.
The grounds are partly open to the public today and house various companies and facilities that make it possible to see the buildings up close. The best way to explore the site is a walk along the former military roads that run between the buildings and structures.
After the military base closed in 2007, the site was transformed into TechCampus Regensburg, which now houses technology companies and research projects. This conversion has given the historical location a second life and turned it into a place of innovation instead of war.
