Burg Tölz, Medieval castle ruin in Bad Tölz, Germany.
The remains of Burg Tölz sit on a high outcrop above the Isar River, beneath the current parish church of Bad Tölz.
Heinrich von Tollenz constructed the castle around 1180, which later came under Wittelsbach control after the extinction of the Tölz family in 1265.
The castle grounds now support the Stadtpfarrkirche Mariä Himmelfahrt, with theories suggesting the church tower originated as the castle's keep.
Archaeological remnants of the castle structure were discovered during the construction of a boys' school in 1828, including sections of masonry with arrow slits.
The castle met its end in the Great Fire of 1453, with Duke Albrecht III subsequently permitting local residents to access the ruins.
