Mainzer Schloss, Castle complex on Stiftsberg, Heilbad Heiligenstadt, Germany
Mainzer Schloss is a three-story sandstone castle complex on Stiftsberg featuring a two-story annex and half-timbered outbuildings. A decorative entrance portal with a star design marks the main access to the compound.
Construction took place between 1736 and 1738 under Prince-Bishop Philipp Karl von Eltz-Kempenich as the residence of the archbishop's governor in the Eichsfeld region. The structure survived a major city fire that swept through shortly after completion.
The chapel built into the castle in 1738 reflects how the archbishopric integrated religious and secular authority in this building. Visitors can still see this blend of spiritual and administrative functions in the space.
The building now serves as the administrative center for Eichsfeld district and has undergone renovation work. Visitors should note that some areas may have restricted access due to ongoing maintenance and administrative functions.
German writer Theodor Storm worked as a judge within these walls, leaving his mark on the region's legal history. His presence here connected the castle to both literary and judicial importance.
