Schloss Sattelpeilnstein, Schloss in der Oberpfalz
Schloss Sattelpeilnstein is a castle and former brewery estate in Traitsching, Bavaria, with a cube-shaped main building and four solid corner towers of stone. The three-story structure shows simple, functional design with small windows and thick walls that emphasize its durability.
The castle was rebuilt in the 1570s by Justinian von Peilnstein after the original fortress from the 12th century fell into disrepair. This reconstruction replaced the earlier Burg Sattelpeilnstein, though some elements of the older structure were preserved.
The name Sattelpeilnstein reflects its historical role in controlling trade routes between neighboring towns. Walking around the site today, you can sense how this place shaped the lives of people who lived and worked here for generations.
The castle is private property, so visitors need to ask for permission before entering the grounds. Come on quieter days to explore the exterior and surrounding landscape without crowds.
A major fire in 1862 threatened to destroy the castle, but it was rebuilt afterward and renewed itself through the disaster. Vinzenz Schauer purchased the estate in 1874 and turned it into one of the region's largest breweries before production ended in 1992.
