Bautzener Autobahnring, tor wyścigowy (Niemcy)
The Bautzener Autobahnring was a racing circuit built on a section of the Autobahn 4 near Bautzen, measuring about 2.9 kilometers with seven turns. The track followed the highway's curve between the Bautzen-West exit and the road toward Kamenz, providing a straightforward layout that worked well for car and motorcycle events.
The track opened with its first race in April 1952 and operated until 1974 as a venue for motorsport events in East Germany. Rising traffic volume on the Autobahn made organizing races increasingly difficult, leading to the final event on June 9, 1974.
The racing events drew drivers and spectators from nearby towns, becoming a gathering point for motorsport enthusiasts in the region. The track represented local passion for speed and competition, reflecting how motor racing became part of the community's identity during that era.
The site no longer operates as an active racing venue and now sits quietly along the outskirts of Bautzen. Visitors can walk around the Autobahn route and observe the surroundings where races once took place, using their imagination to picture the location during event days.
The track made use of a damaged bridge over the Spree River that had been destroyed during World War II, adapting the existing highway route for racing purposes. This resourceful solution allowed organizers to create a racing course without building entirely new infrastructure.
