Wasserschloss Hofheim, Medieval water castle in Hofheim am Taunus, Germany.
Wasserschloss Hofheim is a former water castle in Hofheim am Taunus featuring a preserved ring wall approximately ten meters high that encloses a rectangular area. The complex includes a gate structure and auxiliary buildings such as a former wine press house.
The castle was built between 1352 and 1356 by the Lords of Hofheim and the Counts of Falkenstein under the name Slois zu Hoiffheim. It served as a regional administrative center during the medieval and early modern periods.
The former administrative building from the 1700s now serves community groups and organizations. It shows how the structure adapted over centuries to support local civic life.
The ruins are located at Kellereiplatz in the center of Hofheim am Taunus, making them easy to reach. The site can be explored freely during daylight hours, with the ring wall and gate structure visible from outside.
The castle survived the Thirty Years War without being destroyed by fire, but later restoration efforts were unsuccessful. This means the ruins we see today are the result of careful survival rather than deliberate reconstruction.
