Burg Hohenau, Medieval hilltop castle ruins in Oberdachstetten-Mitteldachstetten, Germany.
Burg Hohenau is a medieval castle ruin on a hill near Oberdachstetten, in Middle Franconia, Bavaria. Stone remains are still visible on the ground and outline the footprint of the former structure.
The castle first appears in written records in 1398 under the name Hohenaib and later came under the control of the Burgraves of Nuremberg. When their hold on the region ended, the fortress fell out of use and gradually fell into ruin.
The ruin sits on a wooded hill and is part of a group of medieval fortifications in Middle Franconia that today attract walkers and history enthusiasts. From the site, the layout of the old structure is still readable on the ground, giving a sense of how it once watched over the surrounding land.
The ruin is reachable on foot from Oberdachstetten along marked trails that wind through the hilly countryside of Middle Franconia. Several other castle ruins lie close by and can easily be combined into a single outing.
Burg Hohenau was one of four castles built close together in this area to form a coordinated network of control over the local territory. This kind of grouped arrangement is rare in Middle Franconia and makes the site of particular interest to archaeologists.
