Burgstall Kugelburg, Medieval castle ruins in Goldbach, Germany
Burgstall Kugelburg is a medieval castle site in Goldbach, with remains positioned at approximately 234 meters in elevation. The location features steep slopes toward the Aschaff valley and retains sections of defensive walls from its period of use.
This site was built in the early 12th century to control the passage from Aschaffenburg toward the Spessart region. It was destroyed in the late 13th century and thereafter ceased its defensive role.
The Kugelnberger family, who controlled this place, founded Schmerlenbach Monastery in 1218 and maintained close ties with the Goldbach parish church. These connections show how the local lords were woven into the religious life of the region.
The site is located on a hilltop and is accessible to walkers who should account for the steep terrain. Ongoing archaeological work in the area may occasionally affect access to certain sections.
Excavations in 2018 uncovered segments of ring walls, pottery, animal bones, and coins from Mainz bishops. These finds reveal the connection between this place and the religious powers of the period.
