Opel-Museum Herne, Automobile museum in Herne, Germany.
The Opel-Museum Herne is a technology and automobile museum in the city of Herne, in the Ruhr region of Germany, housing a large collection of classic Opel models. The cars on display cover several decades of vehicle design and include models such as the Ascona, Kadett, Manta, Rekord, Commodore, Diplomat, and Monza.
The museum was founded in 1990 by engineer Hilmar Born, who had spent years collecting classic Opel cars out of personal passion. What started as a private collection grew into one of the largest privately held gatherings of Opel vehicles in existence.
Alongside the cars, the museum displays original brochures and advertising materials from different decades, showing how the brand spoke to everyday buyers. Visitors who look closely at these printed pieces get a sense of how taste and daily life in Germany shifted over time.
The museum is located in Herne and is easy to reach by public transport or by car. Plan to spend a good amount of time there, as the collection is large and many of the vehicles reward a closer look.
Among the vehicles on display is a six-door Opel Admiral that was built specifically for the German federal government. Next to it, a Kadett C Coupe with almost no mileage shows what these cars looked like when they first left the factory.
