Burg Schauerberg, Medieval castle ruins in Emskirchen, Germany.

Burg Schauerberg is a medieval fortress ruin located at 370 meters elevation within a beech forest above the Altschauerberg district of Emskirchen. The site contained a main building with a fortification system of walls and ditches, whose remains are still visible today.

The fortress was first documented in 1361 and served the Burgraves of Nuremberg as an administrative center. It was destroyed between 1387 and 1389 during military conflicts and was never rebuilt afterward.

The fortress displays typical medieval defense features with walls and ditches that remain visible in the landscape today. Visitors can experience these structures directly while hiking and understand how such fortifications provided protection and control.

The ruins can be reached via hiking trails, particularly the Aurach-Weg and Rangau-Querweg, which pass through the site. Visitors should wear proper hiking shoes as the terrain is forested and sometimes steep.

The fortress served as refuge in 1377 for the notorious robber knight Eppelein von Gailingen, who sought shelter there after attacking citizens from the Free Imperial City of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. This episode reveals how such fortresses functioned as hideouts for questionable characters.
