Sophienberg, Mountain summit in Haag, Germany

Sophienberg rises to 594 meters above sea level, making it the highest elevation point in the Bayreuth region of Upper Franconia, Bavaria.

The mountain, originally named Culmberg, received its current name in the 17th century after Erdmuthe Sophie von Sachsen, wife of Margrave Christian Ernst.

In 1814, the mountain hosted a freedom festival celebrating Napoleon's defeat at Leipzig, with notable writer Jean Paul attending the celebrations.

Multiple hiking trails lead to the summit, including the Culmberger Bergstubn loop from Obernschreez, covering 2.85 kilometers with 70 meters elevation gain.

The mountain contains distinct geological layers, from rhæt sandstone at its base through Amaltheen clay and Posidonienschiefer to iron sandstone at the peak.
