Bitterbachschlucht, Protected sandstone gorge in Lauf an der Pegnitz, Germany.
Bitterbachschlucht is a narrow valley carved from sandstone with tall cliff walls on both sides. The stream runs through this formation creating small waterfalls and cascades as it descends.
The gorge formed during the Ice Age when flowing water carved a new path through the rock layers. This process created the deep sandstone channel visitors see today.
Information panels along the stream explain the local ecosystem and erosion processes to visitors. You can observe how water, rock, and forest interact as you walk through the gorge.
Begin your walk from the outdoor pool parking area on Schützenstrasse, following the red and white trail markers. Wear sturdy shoes with good grip since the paths can be slippery from moisture.
The water has carved up to 5 meters deep into castle sandstone, a rock type normally hidden 10 meters below ground. This visible exposure is rare since the stone usually remains buried underground.
