Hutmuseum Lindenberg, Hat museum in Lindenberg im Allgäu, Germany.
Hutmuseum Lindenberg is a museum in Lindenberg im Allgäu, in the southern German region of Bavaria, dedicated to the history and production of hats. The building houses a broad collection of headwear from different periods alongside original machines, tools, and raw materials that were once used in local hat workshops.
Lindenberg grew into the leading center of straw hat production in Europe during the late 19th century, building on a tradition of home-based craft work that had existed in the region for generations. The industry declined through the 20th century as fashion shifted and competition from other countries increased.
Lindenberg is still known by the nickname "Hat City", and this museum is the main place where that identity is kept alive today. The displays show the tools and finished products that once filled the workshops of the town, giving a sense of how central hatmaking was to daily life here.
The museum is located in the center of Lindenberg and easy to reach on foot from the town's main streets. A visit of around two hours is generally enough to go through all the sections at a comfortable pace.
For much of the 19th century, hatmaking in the Lindenberg area was done almost entirely at home, with whole families, including children, contributing to the production process. This system of cottage industry is one of the less visible stories the museum tells through original documents and objects.
